Update: Deadpool screenwriter Rhett Reese has taken to Twitter to declare that the rumors of Janelle Monae being cast in the film is simply “wrong.”

When Deadpool hit theaters last February, it became an instant crowd-pleasers among general audiences and die-hard fans alike. The Merc with a Mouth’s solo cinematic debut grossed over $700 million at the box office and went on to become the highest-grossing R-rated film of all-time. With a post-credits sequence teasing the appearance of fan favorite character, Cable, a sequel truly was a no-brainer.

The yet-to-be-titled sequel is set begin filming sometime this year and is still in the casting process. Scandal actress Kerry Washington was previously the leading choice for the role of Neena ‘Domino’ Thurman, a mutant mercenary with the ability to telepathically control situations to her favor, but a new actress has since emerged as the frontrunner. Singer Janelle Monae is reportedly Twentieth Century Fox’s top choice.

According to sources via That Hashtag Show, Monae is the studio’s pick for the character, who will play an integral role in the highly-anticipated movie. The Wondaland musician is certainly in demand after prominently appearing in Hidden Figures and Moonlight, a pair of 2016 films that became awards-season favorites with the latter snagging the Oscar for Best Picture.

Should Monae win the role, it is likely that she’ll appear in several installments of the expanding X-Men film universe and possibly even her own spin-off.
