Following a disappointing meeting about education funding with the Illinois governor last week, Chance the Rapper took matters into his own hands yesterday (March 6) when he announced that’d he be donating $1 million to Chicago Public Schools.

Designating $10,000 each to 10 different elementary and high schools, Chance said that his donation wasn’t just to “cultivate Chicago creative minds,” but served as a “call to action” and challenge to “major companies and corporations in Chicago and all across the U.S.” to invest in the city.

Though he may not have caught the attention of Governor Bruce Rauner, who Chance says gave “vague answers” during their meeting and “broke his promise to Chicago’s children” months ago, he did gain the praise of a fellow Chicagoan, former First Lady Michelle Obama.

Following his announcement, Obama took to her Twitter account to publicly thank the rapper, writing:

“Thanks @chancetherapper for giving back to the Chicago community, which gave us so much. You are an example of the power of arts education.”
