Tupac’s name can’t seem to stay out of the headlines lately, as the car he was fatally shot in has now been put up for sale, his big-screen biopic is set to hit theaters this summer, and it’s been announced that he’ll be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame.
But now it’s making waves for another reason. In a recent interview with Genius, rapper Joey Bada$$, much to the chagrin of Twitter, claimed he was a better lyricist than the late legend.
In speaking about historical figures for a Black History Month feature, Bada$$ first said he believes he could fulfill one of ‘Pac’s dreams:
“I believe I am one of the minds that Pac said would change the world. I believe I am one of those. I’m probably not the one that’s going to change the world—probably the one after me. It’s a part of me wanting to have their messages travel further, because their messages resonate with me. I know there is a lot of people out there that resonate with me, who don’t necessarily resonate with them.”
That was all well and good. But it was next statement that had people shooting side-eyes.
“I already know I’m a better rapper than 2pac is. That’s just facts. One-on-one battle, I’ll fling Pac.”
He then attempted to clarify his statements, and denounce the media for “twisting” his words, by reiterating the same belief.
