Earlier this week, Chance the Rapper announced that he’d be meeting privately with the governor of his homestate of Illinois to discuss “funding education in Chicago.” Both men even publicly expressed how excited they were to hear one another’s thoughts.

That meeting has since been cancelled. But for substantial and serious reason. Since yesterday, the Midwest has experienced severe storms that spawned deadly tornadoes and have resulted in the deaths of at least three people.

Chance took to Twitter to announce the postponement of the meeting, as well as give his thoughts and prayers to the affected.

However, Chance did get the opportunity to discuss education in a recent interview with Katie Couric where he told the journalist, “Our school system has been underfunded for almost two years….It would be dope if all the politicians on the left and right could approve a temporary budget that could fund after-school programs.”

After Couric mentioned that there was a 58-percent increase in gun violence in Chicago last year, the rapper also gave his thoughts, saying:

“What is going on is bogus. As individual acts, it’s terrifying and also sad….We have some of the strictest gun laws as a state but there’s a lot of illegal gun trafficking coming from all the states that surround us. I think it takes an investment in everyone’s lives. The respect for life is little than none in this city because we don’t really feel like people care about us….The violence in Chicago is isolated to certain parts and maybe if that violence moved outside of those same parameters, maybe people would feel like it’s important to do something or take action.”
