Shots fired?
Last night Gucci Mane took to Twitter and ensured fans that he was gearing up to drop “the hardest song of the year” at the stroke of midnight. Well, he did.
Reuniting with Nicki Minaj, Guwop released a new song called “Make Love,” which is expected to appear on his forthcoming album Drop Top Wop.
Bar-heavy with a drunken-rattle, the hypnotic collaboration finds Guwop in celebratory mode, chanting about net income (“Making money like I’m making sweet love”), praising his jewelry game (“These stones in my choker are 2 karats a piece”), and planning out his wedding (“I’m tryna book Beyoncé for my wedding day”). Clearly for Guwop, life is looking brighter than a glass of lemonade. With Nicki in tow, the two pick up where they left off on “Freaky Gurl” almost a decade ago. However, what makes this different than the ’07 collab is how much Ms. Minaj steals the show, and this time she does with a verse that feels personal.
“Oh you the qu-e-e-the queen of this here?/One platinum plaque, album flopped, b—h, where?,” she spits. Keep in mind, this verse also happens to arrive around the same time as her collaboration verse for Jason Derulo’s “Swalla” featured some heavy bars: “I gave these bi—es two years, now your time’s up/Bless her heart, she throwing shots but every line sucks.” The verses have already spilled onto social media.
Because the female rap scene appears to be scarce (although that depends on who you ask), Nicki’s verse has drawn much speculation that it was a target at Remy Ma, whose series of scathing verses almost always gets pinned to Nicki by the public. On Phresher’s “Wait a Minute (Remix)” a few months back, the BX rapper’s guest verse drew plenty of conversation as many pondered whether she was sending shots. Then on “Warning,” one of the many standouts on Plata O Plomo, she raps, “What’s your war plan they should of prepared you / I’m ready to ride on bi—hes already in gear two / They said for me to blow that I had to air you / Could of ended your career, but I spared you.”
Despite the speculation, Remy recently appeared on The Breakfast Club and denied any talks of beef. “If you look at the history of Remy Ma, whenever I’ve had a problem with any female in the entire game, I will say your name. She added, “I am going to say your government. I’m going to look it up and say your mother’s name, your father’s name, your kids’ name. I want you to know I’m talking about you.”
However, with Nicki’s verse on Guwop’s new single, the chatter will only grow bigger. “See listen silly rabbits, to be the queen of rap / You gotta sell records, you gotta get plaques / S, plural, like the S on my chest / Now sit your dumbass down, you got a F on your test,” she raps. The line also happens to come after Nicki mentioned, “Going against Nicki is gonna cost ya.”
“Make Love” is the first collaboration beteen Gucci and Nicki since 2010’s “Haterade.”
