For nearly her entire career, Rihanna has rejected the idea of being a role model, telling Vogue UK as far back as 2011, “[Being one] became more of my job than I wanted it to be. I just want to make music. That’s it,” and curtly telling NME in 2015, “I’m not.”

But as much as she wants to deny it, her good will still refuses to go unnoticed.

Citing both the college scholarship program she launched for international students continuing education in America, and the breast cancer diagnosis and treatment facility she built in Barbados, Harvard University has named the singer Humanitarian of the Year for 2017.

As the Harvard Foundation “recognizes prominent public-spirited leaders” each year, Rihanna is in good company alongside past recipients James Earl Jones, Malala Yousafzai, Arthur Ashe and others.

The singer will come to the college’s campus on Tuesday (February 28) to accept the Peter J. Gomes Humanitarian Award at a ceremony.
