2017 is for PnB Rock.
After years of putting in work and going through the motions, Philadelphia native PnB Rock is living out his destiny.
Last month, he released his major label debut project GTTM: Going Through the Motions, a project that skillfully balances his lasting hooks and piercing raps. “Selfish,” the hit single from the project, has charted on the Billboard Hot 100 and given Rock his first certified single.
“Everything is coming together. Everything I put in work for is coming through,” the Philly native with the infectious rap-sung ability and his true story told REVOLT. To think, there was a time when all of this didn’t seem possible.
Born Rakim Allen, the rapper picked up his stage name from a place near and dear to him: Philadelphia. “Philly gave me my sauce. I feel like I talk different, I got a different slang. I mean that’s pretty much everywhere but it’s different in Philly,” he explained. Carrying PnB in his name, a reference for Pastorius and Baynton, the street corner near where he grew up in the Germantown neighborhood of Philadelphia, Rock went through some hard knocks before collecting gold plaques. In and out of shelters with his family at a young age and later getting caught up in the streets, at 19, the Philly native found himself locked up behind bars for 33 months. Following this bid, Rock took a liking to music and began showcasing his singing via the viral #TBH posts at the time. Keeping up with it, the singer-rapper released two mixtapes and just when things started picking up, he was sent back behind bars for violating probation. “It was when I was doing the music but I had just got my buzz popping. But during that four months I was getting so much fan mail with people telling me like, ‘You’re my inspiration, I look up to you.’ And these were from people I never even met,” he remembered. This attention only fueled his hunger.
“I was getting love. When I came home that’s when it really hit me, like this shit is real,” he continued. “Then things started clicking and the labels started calling.”
In 2015, he inked a deal with Atlantic Records and earlier this year dropped his much-talked about debut, Going Through the Motions. With plans in place for an upcoming collaborative EP with fellow new star A-Boogie with da Hoodie, placements for David Guetta and the upcoming “Fast & Furious” soundtrack, 2017 is PnB Rock’s year for the taking.
