Despite winning the Grammy for Best Electronic Album (Skin) last weekend, Flume is still releasing music that didn’t make the cut during its production.

Back in November, he dropped the four-track Skin Companion EP 1 and has followed suit today (February 17) with Skin Companion EP 2, previously telling Triple J about the project:

“There’s so many tracks I’ve been wanting to get off my chest for so long now and I think it’s the end of the ‘Skin’ campaign and it’s a nice way to end it because it’s instrumental stuff, there’s some vocal collabs, I’m just really happy how it turned out.”

Vocal collabs, indeed.

On the opener “Enough,” gone is the atmospheric and ambient soundscape we’ve grown to know Flume for, and in its place is Pusha T sounding his hungriest over heavy-hitting, ominous trap that grinds, rattles, and clangs. The rumbling remains on follow-up “Weekend,” with strings and a squawk added to the mix, but when the track softens halfway through, it feels like guest Moses Sumney’s angelic vocals are what saved it from itself. Closer “Fantastic” sees Glass Animals frontman Dave Bayley‘s trademark voice, syrupy and husky, get chopped-and-screwed for something ultimately hypnotic and hazy. And though “Depth Change” doesn’t boast any features, it’s still Flume at his finest, making synths buzz then burst, or squeal then sink, among us like a firework.
