Thirty-four years after its release, Michael Jackson’s Thriller is now the highest-certified album in U.S. history having now gone 33x-platinum.
The late legend beat out only himself as he held the previous record, as well. Last February, Thriller’s certification was raised from 30 million to 32 million when the RIAA revamped its Gold & Platinum Awards Program to include more than just pure album sales (where one album sale equals one unit), but also tracks (10 tracks sold equals one unit) and streams (1,500 streams equals one unit).
A plaque commemorating the milestone was presented to Epic Records chairman L.A. Reid over Grammy weekend.
