Bruno Mars went from simple and cool to extravagant and iconic with his wardrobe during the Grammys tonight and, on both occasions, his vocals remained flawless.

Donned in full-on Purple Rain era attire, Bruno paid tribute to the late great Prince. He came on stage wearing a sequenced purple suit and shirt with the ruffles as he channeled the icon during “Let’s Go Crazy.” Mars played a white guitar and had the crowd rocking in the Staples Center in Los Angeles. But first, the signature words from Prince on the song’s opening played as his symbol shined on the big screen on the stage

“Dearly beloved / We are gathered here today / to get through this thing called “life” / Electric word, life / It means forever and that’s a mighty long time/ But I’m here to tell you / There’s something else / The afterworld / A world of never-ending happiness / You can always see the sun, day or night / So when you call up that shrink in Beverly Hills /You know the one, Dr. Everything’ll-Be-Alright / Instead of asking him how much of your time is left / Ask him how much of your mind, baby / Cause in this life / Things are much harder than in the afterworld / In this life / You’re on your own / And if de-elevator tries to bring you down. “If you don’t like, The world you’re living in,” Mars sang. “Take a look around / At least you got friends / You see I called my old lady / For a friendly word / She picked up the phone / Dropped it on the floor / (Ah-s ah-s) is all I heard / Are we gonna let de-elevator bring us down? / Oh, no let’s go!”

Prince’s longtime good friends and signees Morris Day and The Time, preceded Mars on the Prince tribute with “Jungle Love” and “The Bird.”

Earlier in the night, Mars, clad in a leather sweatsuit and white and red Nikes, ripped the show with his own “That’s What I Like.”
