It was extra emotional at the end of Adele’s tribute to deceased icon George Michael tonight at the Grammys. Wearing all black, Adele filled the Staples Center with her voice singing a new arrangement of the Michael’s dance hit “Fast Love.” Adele’s version was a slowed-down ballad but, right before the end of the first verse, she stopped, feeling her vocals were not up to par.
“I know this is live TV,” she said. “I can’t do anything like last year. I know this is live TV, I’m sorry for swearing and sorry for starting again. I can’t mess this up for him. I’m sorry.”
“F–k!,” she exclaimed off the mic before starting over.
“Looking for some education,” she commenced again, with pictures and video snippets of Michael playing on a screen behind her.
_“Made my way into the night / All that bullshit conversation / Baby, can’t you read the signs? / I won’t bore you with the details, baby / I don’t even wanna waste your time / Let’s just say that maybe / You could help to ease my mind./ Baby, I ain’t Mr. Right / But if you’re looking for fast love / If that’s love in your eyes, it’s more than enough / Had some bad love / Some fast love, is all that I’ve got on my mind.”
After the performance, Adele turned her back momentarily away from the crowd and put her face in her hands. When she turned back, she was supported with a standing ovation from the crowd.
This was Adele’s second time performing on the Grammy stage tonight. She opened the entire show with “Hello.”
