With every Jay Z verse comes Genius clicks, lyric-digging, and a million and one questions. “Is it true stay he stay in beef,” he once rapped in 1997. And it’s for good reason because the arrival of new Jigga verses produce a lot of speculation. So last night (February 12), when Tidal surprised fans with Jay Z’s first 2017 offering via a feature alongside wife Beyoncé on DJ Khaled’s “Shining” single, the streets got to tweeting and the theories got to be theorized.
A flurry of standout moments take place in Jay’s verse. He cleverly references 21 Savage (“21 Grammys, I’m a savage ni—a”) and even finds time to open up about having twins (“The European trucks for the twin babies… I want a boy and girl, I fight for truth / Whatever God give me, I’m cool”). But the one line that is generating speculation is one that has some believing is a shot toward Drake:
“I know you ain’t out here talkin’ numbers, right? / I know you ain’t out here talkin’ summers, right? / I know you ain’t walkin’ ’round talkin’ down, saying boss shit when you a runner, right?“
While this isn’t the first time a Jay verse has spawned Drake submlinal shots, the line has drawn a buzz on social media with many believing Hov is responding to subtle jabs that may have been thrown toward him on Drizzy’s “Summer Sixteen” and “Sneakin.”
