It’s official. Last week’s Chris Robinson-directed BET miniseries “The New Edition Story” was a success. According to reports, the three-part biopic averaged around four million viewers a night and not only were the fans who grew up listening to the legendary Boston group highly pleased with the accurate and revealing movie, but a whole generation of new fans were enthralled by the rollercoaster of a tale.
Director Benny Boom, who knows a thing or two about biopics as he’s helming the upcoming feature about Tupac, “All Eyez On Me,” told REVOLT that he enjoyed seeing N.E.’s saga come to life.
“I hung out with a couple of the New Edition cats over the summer,” Boom said while on the Long Island set of the new video he directed, “Foreign” by newcomer INTL Special. “I just happened to see them in L.A. I was just happy for them. Those are one of them groups, same age bracket. You grew up with them, you always want success for those groups. One thing I remember when I was a kid, my mom would tell me that, ‘The people you listen to, you not going to have any oldies. What’s going to happen with that music? When you become an adult, no one’s going to want to see them.’ And it’s always good and refreshing when you see New Edition come out and there’s a story about them, and Bell Biv DeVoe has an album coming out. It’s always a great thing to show respect and show love back to those musicians and those artists that paved the way for us.”
“All Eyez On Me” will hit theaters June 16.
