Despite taking a stand against streaming platforms like Spotify and removing his music from all streaming services except Tidal, Prince and his catalog may soon appear on the very companies he was against.
As Billboard reports, representatives managing Prince’s estate are closing in on streaming deals with Spotify and Apple Music in time for an all-star tribute for the singer at next month’s Grammys ceremony.
The report comes after a Bloomberg report noted that reps for Prince had “all but finished a deal” for the rights to his catalog that would serve as a promotional powerhouse following the Grammys tribute. According to Billboard through an unnamed source, Rihanna, Bruno Mars, and The Weeknd had all been approached about taking part in the tribute.
A “likely scenario,” as per the report, is that the tribute would be a television commercial that would air during the Grammy broadcast, which would announce that certain songs are available on platforms like Spotify, Apple Music, and possibly other platforms.
While Prince allowed some music to appear on Tidal, which has since ended in a lawsuit, most of the singer’s catalog remain unavailable for streaming.
