Mariah Carey and her now infamous set for “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” in New York City continues to be 2017’s much-talked about performance. Following failed attempts at damage control, including reported claims from her team that Dick Clark Productions “sabotaged” her performance for ratings, Carey has since unpacked the weight as a source tells Entertainment Tonight that the singer’s creative director Anthony Burrell is “not being brought back [in 2017] for a number of reasons.”

Mariah Carey’s awkward NYE performance is the perfect bow on 2016

According to reports, Burrell was fired for his decision to move away Carey’s background singers during the performance without consulting others in her team. This left Carey lost on stage as her in-earpiece apparently went dead.

Burnell has not commented on the recent news, but did tweet about the night of Carey NYE performance.

Carey, meanwhile, spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the incident, stating, “All I can say is Dick Clark was an incredible person and I was lucky enough to work with him when I first started in the music business.”

“I’m of the opinion that Dick Clark would not have let an artist go through that and he would have been as mortified as I was in real time,” she continued.

The singer’s performance spawned several parodies since going viral, including from the San Antonio Spurs and late night television.
