There’s no doubt that Kim Burrell has been a well-respected figure in the gospel community for many years, but she’s currently facing backlash after delivering a homophobic sermon at a Pentecostal church in Houston, Texas. And now, unsurprisingly, she’s been dropped from an scheduled performance for Jan. 5 on The Ellen Degeneres Show.

Last week, Burrell gained attention after video surfaced of her denouncing gays during a church service. She can be seen saying:

“I came to tell you about sin. That perverted homosexual spirit, and the spirit of delusion and confusion, it has deceived many men and women.”

On December 30, she took to Facebook Live to clarify her comments, but did not apologize, instead saying:

“There are a lot of people that I’m aware of that struggle or deal [with] or have that spirit. Have I discriminated against them? Have I ever outright told them that I don’t love you and you going to hell? Who gives me the right to say that I’m telling someone that I’m going to hell? I don’t give that call.”

Still, she reiterated that homosexuality is a “sin … against the nature of God.”

Since then, Burrell’s recent collaborators Pharrell (who she was set to perform music from Hidden Figures with on Ellen) and Janelle Monae (who appears in the aforementioned film) have subliminally denounced Burrell’s words.

Pharrell took to Instagram to “condemn hate speech.”

Monae reposted Pharrell‘s message with added words of her own, adding:

“I will rejoice when folks stop thinking they ARE GOD, Jesus’ assistant, picking and choosing what ‘sins’ are acceptable in the Bible, and using the Bible as a whip! WE can’t afford anymore tearing down of our shared humanity. My advice: If your religion is causing you to spew out words of hate, judge, or look down on others because of who one loves then you need to change it.”

TMZ has since caught up with Monae who suggested Burrell had been dropped from the performance on Ellen, the popular daytime talk show hosted by the openly gay Degeneres. Monae told the paparazzi:

“I don’t think she’s performing. She’s not. She’s not performing.”

Burrell also appeared on the recently-released Blonde from Frank Ocean, another entertainer who has openly come out as gay. He has yet to respond, but activist Deray McKesson took to Twitter to express his hope that gay people refuse to work with Burrell from here on out.
