Big Sean took to Twitter last night (December 22), surprising fans with the long-awaited announcement of his new album, I Decided.. In addition to revealing the title, the G.O.O.D. Music rapper unveiled the album artwork, release date (February 3), pre-order link, second single (“Moves”), and hinted at the arc of this upcoming narrative.

Hours after teasing the new LP, Sean spoke to Entertainment Weekly to detail the concept behind the forthcoming release. According to rapper, I Decided, which he began recording in the summer of 2015, is rooted in the concept of rebirth. The narrative details the story of a man who gets reborn.

“I [told my friend], ‘Sometimes I feel like I was an old man and didn’t succeed in life and asked for a second chance, and this is my second chance.’ He was like, ‘Make that the album,’” he said. “People who can be inspired by it, that’s who I’m doing it for. Everybody else can f— off or whatever.”

Adding to that point, he continued, “That’s not something that people expect from a Big Sean project… so I’m happy we are delivering something unexpected. I’m excited to push the culture and push my artistry to the limit.”

As far as the content, Sean said the inspiration behind the concept is his love of old-school soul and R&B music — a genre that has lived in material like “Play No Games” and the entire TWENTY88. “I was just at this Motown exhibit with Berry Gordy with my mom… he was talking about Marvin Gaye and Stevie Wonder and the Temptations and how one of the things they did was inspire people,” Sean recalled. “They inspired people to have a good time, to do better — to be a better version of themselves. That really stuck with me. That’s what I want to do, too.”

With a February 3rd date set for I Decided, Sean left teasers for what to expect in the singles “Bounce Back” and “Moves.” Speaking on the message behind the new LP, he assures that he will continue to stick to his signature sound, while finding a place for the story to work perfectly. “You don’t want to overdo it,” he said in regards to drilling a message via the album concept. “I’m not trying to sit here and preach to people. You can get [a message] across with a song like “Bounce Back.” We’ve all bounced back from something before, so that fits my story perfect, but you never would have known that from hearing it by itself.”

Sean’s fourth studio album, I Decided., is available for pre-order now.
