Earlier this week, the Grammy nominations were announced and, as always, all eyes were on the nominees for Album of the Year.

And while it’s common for fans to feel delighted (or slighted) at the sight of their fave artist’s name appearing (or not appearing) on the list, it’s rare that the musicians themselves weigh in on the picks.

But that’s just what country singer Sturgill Simpson has done.

His newest LP, A Sailor’s Guide to the Earth, sits alongside Beyonce, Adele, Drake, and Justin Bieber’s latest efforts in the AOTY category, but even he doesn’t think he belongs there.

In fact, he’d rather see Frank Ocean up for the award, instead.

Simpson recently told The New York Times:

“I really, really wish, honestly, and no [expletive]—I would’ve liked to see Frank Ocean’s name where mine is. But that’s not my place to say. I totally understand [his protest]. I just thought that record Blonde was really groundbreaking.”

As much as we agree, Ocean’s album wouldn’t have been up for the award anyway. Not only did he did not submit Blonde for consideration by the Sept. 30 deadline, but he later revealed the move was intentional and that he’d rather sit out the show in protest, telling

“I think the infrastructure of the awarding system and the nomination system and screening system is dated. I’d rather this be my Colin Kaepernick moment.”

So that makes Kanye West’s plans to boycott the show (if Ocean was not nominated) in vain.
