The nominations are in for the 59th Grammy Awards, which will broadcast live from Los Angeles on Feb. 12, 2017. While LL Cool J has finally relinquished hosting duties to Carpool Karaoke host James Corden, this just might be the year black artists make a resurgence and get rightfully acknowledged for their contributions to music. (The Oscars haven’t been the only #SoWhite awards show, tbh.) As a note, the Academy considered albums released between Oct. 1, 2015 and Sept. 30, 2016.
There are 84 categories, but here are some of the highlights: Bey runs the board with nine nominations. As we forecasted, Chance The Rapper has changed the game and become the first artist nominated for a streaming-only album — seven noms in five categories for Lil Chano. Former Grammy queen Adele has come in behind Drake, Kanye West, and Rihanna, with five nods to their respective eight. Newcomer Desiigner slid in, with “Panda” nominated for Best Rap Performance. And Remy Ma makes a triumphant return to the rap scene!
