“Blackish” star Yara Shahidi says that one of the treats on set happens with her big cousin Nas visits one of the show’s tapings. The writers in particular are amazed when they see him. But besides being able to stunt on her and crew, the talented actress notes Nas is the guy with which “I get to talk about James Baldwin, who’s been there every step of the way to celebrate and support my goals and aspirations.”

Shahidi was on hand to be a part of the 2016 REVOLT Music Conference gala ceremony where Nas was honored for his accomplishments and influence, and the family love was abundant and a highlight of the night.

“He’s given me two of my best friends, Destiny and Knight,” Shahidi said with a smile, referring to Nas’ two kids, as he looked on with a proud grin.

“And in his spare time, he happens to be a world renowned wordsmith, a visionary, an MC, a venture capitalist, a producer, writer; he is the quintessential renaissance man. I have always felt his impact and influence of his music in my life. From memorizing the lyrics to ‘What Goes Around’ to analyzing ‘The Message’ and ‘One Mic,’ I’ve grown up with his ‘I Can’ as my anthem, with the daily motivation of ‘If I Ruled the World’ as the reminder of the power and magic of our people, with ‘Destroy and Rebuild’ as the inspiration behind my activism. My cousin has influenced my life not only with his music but by sharing his deep love and belief in our family, community and our history and our culture. Nasir is ‘half man, half amazing.’ I love you cuzzo.”
