When we went to Childish Gambino’s PHAROS experience back in September, we knew the rapper-actor had switched lanes and decided to dive headfirst into funk and soul, but we had no idea the final product would sound this good.

“Redbone,” the second single off his upcoming Awaken, My Love album (following lead “Me and Your Mama”), is the ultimate space-funk noir groove, thanks to a sticky oozing bass, twinkly percussion, and Gambino’s flawless showcase of both his falsetto and raspy wails that recall throwback sex symbols. And on the track, the singer details his seemingly ambivalent feelings for a woman who’s played with his emotions.

But who would do such a thing?

“Daylight, I wake up feeling like you won’t play right / I used to know, but now that shit don’t feel right / It made me put away my pride / So long, you made a nigga wait for some, so long / You make it hoverboard like that, but no wrong / I’m wishing I could make this mine, oh.”

Awaken, My Love is due December 2.
