Queen biopic nabs "Mr. Robot" star for Freddie Mercury role

Like most biopics, the making of the film based on the legendary band Queen, titled “Bohemian Rhapsody,” has been one long-gestating process. However, after a long five years since its announcement, the picture is finally full steam ahead now that “Mr Robot” star Rami Malek has been casted to play the band’s legendary frontman.

As confirmed by Variety, Malek is attached to play Freddie Mercury in the long-awaited biopic with “X-Men” director Bryan Singer tapped in to direct.

Producer Graham King, who won an Oscar for his work on “The Departed,” has been working on getting this film made since 2010. Originally, Sacha Baron Cohen was set to play Mercury, however the actor later abandoned the project, citing creative differences with the band. In an interview with Daily Mail earlier this year, Queen’s Brian May disputed Cohen’s claims, stating, “Why would he go away and say that we didn’t want to make a gritty film? Are we the kind of people who have ever ducked from the truth? I don’t think so.”

Queen members Brian May and Roger Taylor are attached as music producers for the biopic. Filming is set to begin filming early next year.
