From fervently endorsing Bernie Sanders to encouraging his followers to support more black-owned businesses and banks, Killer Mike is no stranger to speaking his mind.
And he has lots to say about tomorrow’s election, too — though his words may have been misconstrued this time around.
Last week, he took to Instagram to tell “Black Folk” to “stay the fuck home” from the voting polls. Granted, the order was conditional. What the rapper explained was that if their “leaders…elected officials…” and others offered nothing beneficial for the community in regards to jobs, weed decriminalization, and other concerns, then to “make a demand.”
The last part was lost on many, however, as the rapper caught flack shortly after for seemingly discouraging black voters from doing their duty. So the Run the Jewels member clarified his comments in a new Instagram video posted yesterday (November 6).
In the clip, he says, among other things:
“I am voting locally. You should vote—locally. And what I mean is, when you go to that booth… Who are your judges? Who are your prosecutors? Who are the senators that you are voting for? Get out and vote, I’m just saying, when you vote, ask for something back. So, go vote.”
