When news first broke of a Love Jones musical, we were a bit skeptical, we admit. After all, a film doesn’t gain cult classic status unless people are super protective of it. We even asked Theodore Witcher, director of the 1997 movie, what he thought about the theatrical reboot:
Yet here we are, with a new production intended to honor the 20th anniversary of the original. Chrisette Michele, Musiq Soulchild, Marsha Ambrosius, MC Lyte, Raheem DeVaughn, Dave Hollister, and Chaz Shepherd star in Love Jones The Musical, which hit Brooklyn last weekend. The cast of R&B, neosoul, and rap greats gave the audience high expectations. Here’s proof that they delivered:
Another highlight of the original was its beloved soundtrack. You can hear a medley of the play’s music below, but it’s nothing like hearing it live. Love Jones The Musical runs until early December all over the U.S.:
