It takes 20 years of writing music to be eligible for the Songwriters Hall of Fame. Thanks to a debut album called Reasonable Doubt that was released in 1986, Jay Z is now up for consideration. Maybe you’ve heard of it? On Thursday (October 20), Shawn Carter was nominated for the 2017 Songwriting Hall of Fame — if he wins, he will make history as the first rapper to be inducted.

And what other rapper (slash businessman slash investor slash philanthropist) is more worthy? Hov has released 12 studio albums and over 100 singles and sold more than 100 million records. The governing body says of Jay, “The celebrated songwriter has won 21 Grammy Awards, three American Music Awards, seven BET Awards, two Billboard Music Awards, eight MTV Video Music Awards and numerous other honors.”

The nominees are split into non-performing songwriters and performing songwriters. Just a few of the performing songwriters nominated alongside Jay Z are Madonna, Gloria Estefan, Vince Gill, Bryan Adams, Kool & the Gang, George Michael, and Sylvester “Sly” Stone.

Some of the non-performing songwriters include Max Martin, the pop super producer who has received ASCAP’s Songwriter of the Year award eight times, tying fellow nominees, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis. And Babyface, who has written and produced over 26 No. 1 R&B hits throughout his career.

The Annual Induction & Awards Gala takes place June 15, 2017, in New York City.
