ThiDaniel got his start at 3 years old when he stole the spotlight during his brother’s school recital. He freestyled a song and impressed everyone, including a Julliard teacher who later taught him piano at 5 years old. Of African-American and Puerto Rican descent, ThiDaniel is a military brat whose father, an Army colonel, passed on his love of classic rock and kickstarted his idolization of Jimi Hendrix, leading him to take up guitar. With all of his bubbling talent, ThiDaniel attended Berklee College of Music to perfect his technical skills, but he later dropped out.

Shortly after while at home with his parents in Virginia he had an epiphany, leading him to realize he needed to move to Los Angeles in order to launch his music career. He picked up and headed West with no money and no plan, and started going into studios and doing odd music gigs to make a living. “Purple” showcases ThiDaniel’s undeniable ability to create insatiable music, which caught the attention of seasoned producer Tricky Stewart. “Daniel’s music reminded me all over again why I started making music! He without question was put on earth to make music, and I believe I was chosen to help him deliver it,” Stewart says.

Get to know ThiDaniel in his own words:

My sound in 5 words: purple, lilac, lavender, plum, iris.

Best part of making this video: The best part of making the video was really experiencing the desert and Britni showing me the galaxies past the stars in the night sky.

What inspires your art: Spirits, movement, and healing inspire my art. There is something to be said about moving in and out, moving through spirits, and letting that go that really feels like a healing moment.

Concept of the song: I don’t care to partake in the school of explaining concepts of songs, what does that shit mean to you? That’s the whole point.

Instagram, Twitter, or Snapchat: Snapchat all day.

Favorite emoji: The sushi emoji, because sushi is life.
