The Lady knows just how to lure us in, doesn’t she?

First, Gaga got fists and hearts pumping with the ’80s-inspired arena-ready rock of her lead Joanne single, “Perfect Illusion.” But the track was divisive, and its Billboard chart performance proves that, peaking only at No.15 and already sinking to No.59.

The follow-up, however–“Million Reasons”–is less-so.

Spare piano and acoustic guitar are all that support the singer as she looks for a single excuse to stay in a failing relationship. Relatable in lyric, it’s as equally inclusive in genre, tinged by country and folk but her vocal urgency feels at-home in both soul and rock-y power ballads.

The entire thing is hard to pinpoint, but that makes it all the more inviting to play again and again. Maybe with a glass of whiskey in hand.

“I bow down to pray / I try to make the worst seem better / Lord, show me the way / To cut through all his worn out leather / I’ve got a hundred million reasons to walk away / But baby, I just need one good one to stay”
