Rapper Shawty Lo, born Carlos Walker, was the victim in a fiery car accident early Wednesday morning. A native of Moultrie, Georgia, Walker was 40 years old.

Reports say the accident happened at about 2:20 a.m. when a white Audi went over a guardrail on the I-285 southbound ramp to Cascade Road, hit two trees, and burst into flames. The driver was ejected from the Audi and pronounced dead on the scene.

After initially describing the accident as a hit-and-run, “it has been confirmed now that it was a single car accident,” Fulton police spokeswoman Cpl. Maureen Smith told the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Alongside fellow Atlanta rappers Fabo, Mook B, and Stoney, Shawty Lo was part of the group D4L. They had several so-called “snap music” hits, including “Laffy Taffy,” which reached No. 1 on the charts in 2006. He went solo shortly after, and was known for the song “Dey Know.” In 2008, he received a “Rookie of the Year” BET Award.

He leaves behind 11 children. This family just lost Shawty Lo’s father about a week ago.

This confirmation was tweeted from his account early Wednesday morning:
