Nearly two years have passed since the Wu-Tang Clan dropped their sixth album, A Better Tomorrow, a release that wasn’t praised nor panned by critics and fans. Despite its reception fans still await new material from the 9 Milli Bros., and even moreso since there’s a slim chance they’ll be able to hear Once Upon a Time in Shaolin.

After performing at Budweiser’s Made In America festival over Labor Day weekend as part of his new venture, Banks & Steelz, RZA spoke with REVOLT, offering a unique update on the status of the Clan’s next project. RZA revealed that he would be handing his producer reigns over to Ghostface Killah.

“I had a conversation with Ghostface couple months ago, he wants to potentially go in and make another Wu album. And I basically gave him the blessings to go ‘head and he can construct that.”

His comments seem to confirm what Ghost had previously revealed in an interview with HipHopDX back in June, saying, “RZA put the ball in my hand. He said, ‘Yo, I want you to do it,’ and I been wanting to do it, and that’s a big test for me right there.”

Words for the Genius: An open letter to GZA

Should Ghostface Killah produce the Wu-Tang Clan’s next album, it would mark the first time that a group effort would lack immediate input from their de facto leader. Since their 1993 debut, Enter the Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), RZA has served as a main producer on all of the group’s albums, and is responsible for giving the group their extremely distinctive, grime-filled, slums of New York sound, laced with Kung-Fu samples that would place them in the upper echelon of rap music.

Despite the change in roles, RZA admitted that he was looking forward to what the Wallabee Champ will do with the responsibility. “It’s interesting for me to see if Ghostface, who’s been very consistent in his music, could add his layer… if he could drive a Wu record?”
