A film set to star actor Johnny Depp as a detective investigating the murders of Tupac Shakur and The Notorious B.I.G. has been acquired by Open Road Films.

According to Entertainment Weekly, the distributor has picked up the investigative thriller, called “Labyrinth.”

Russell Poole, Lead Investigator In Notorious B.I.G.’s Murder, Passes Away

Directed by Brad Furman, production for the film will take place in November and will find Depp playing the role of Russell Poole, a former LAPD detective who was working on solving the slayings for two decades. Poole died last year from a reported heart attack while meeting with Los Angeles County Sheriff homicide investigators about a cold case. The detective collapsed during the meet and was unresponsive, according to a sheriff’s department official at the time.

The upcoming film finds Christian Contreras behind the script, adapting Randall Sullivan’s dense nonfiction book “LAbyrinth: A Detective Investigates the Murders of Tupac Shakur and Notorious B.I.G., the Implication of Death Row Records’ Suge Knight, and the Origins of the Los Angeles Police Scandal.”
