Robert Glasper's 'ArtScience' is "very much fusion" and forward-thinking
The oft-dubbed jazz musician wouldn’t call his new album a “jazz record.”
Before Robert Glasper and his quartet The Experiment won the Grammy for Best R&B Album (Black Radio) back in 2013, you may have heard the pianist backing Bilal on his debut album or Q-Tip on The Renaissance or Kanye West on his fellow Grammy-winning Late Registration. And, afterward, you may have heard Glasper’s musical stylings on screen as the musical supervisor behind last year’s Miles Davis biopic or being recruited for some of the most critically acclaimed albums of even just the last year: playing piano, keyboard, and/or synths on Kendrick Lamar’s To Pimp a Butterfly, Anderson .Paak’s Malibu, and Maxwell’s blackSUMMERS’night.
But society and media’s desire to oversimplify and (lazy) nature to overlook–despite that clearly hip-hop-affected résumé above)–has led to him simply being dubbed a jazz musician. But Glasper won’t be pigeonholed, especially not with his latest LP, ArtScience, out today (September 16).
The multi-talented multi-hyphenate (he’s also a producer, arranger, and composer) sat down with REVOLT to discuss the all-inclusive feel of his newest album.

“The album starts off with straight-ahead jazz and then it goes into hip-hop and then it goes right into some trap — literally, that’s the first three things you hear when you hear the album…. I just said, ‘Let’s not have any preconceived notion of what it should be.”
