Cassette tapes? Vinyl records? 8 tracks? What are thooooosse?!
This past weekend, DJ Shadow hosted his first annual Storage Sale at Rappcats in Los Angeles. Over the years, Shadow has collected hundreds of vinyl LPs, 45s, 12″s, 8-tracks, cassette tapes, posters, and more and recently decided to sell the duplicate copies to local fans and upcoming producers to clean house. He described it as “a year-long thrift-store hunt consolidated into two days.”

Inside the store was Shadow’s personally-used record collection along with other cool memorabilia that fans combed through picking out their favorites. The DJ was there on-hand taking pictures, signing autographs, and even took the time to spin while people shopped. The store also displayed two onsite record players that fans could use to check out a record before buying.

With streaming now the top dog for music consumption, these mediums and formats will become even more rare. While convenience usually wins out in the end, going through the history of hip hop along with some nostalgia is never a bad thing. If you missed it this time, we can hope that DJ Shadow finds some more duplicates and lets us in on a piece of history.
