Zayn Malik, aka The Hot One, left One Direction in 2015 and isn’t looking back. But his next move is kind of strange. The “Pillowtalk” singer is teaming up with producer Dick Wolf, creator of the Law & Order franchise, for an hourlong boy band drama at NBC. Titled — wait for it — Boys, the show is about the pressures and excitement that come with being in a hugely successful group.

M.I.A. recruits Zayn for new “Freedun” track

Actually, considering One Direction got their start on the UK version of The X-Factor, maybe Zayn is the perfect person for this project. According to Noelle Wolf, who first brought the idea to her husband, Dick: “We were intrigued by the synergistic potential that Zayn brings to the project. Boys will be a show that’s totally integrated on broadcast and digital platforms. Casting and original music will be major components, giving the show promotional potential on multiple levels.”

So should we expect original music like Empire? Spontaneous bursts of song like Glee? Who knows, but since we lived through the glory days of NSYNC and Backstreet Boys, we took the liberty of coming up with seven juicy potential storylines that could totally happen.

1. The boys are all set to embark on their first tour, opening for the biggest girl group on the planet, Heaven’s Angelz.

But midway through, one of the girls gets pregnant and the tour gets cut short. Is one of the boys the daddy? Can they find another act to open for while they’re still hot?

2. The boys fly to the Amazon to shoot the video for their big single, “Wet Dreams,” in an exotic location.

Little do they know, it’s flood season in the jungle. While they wait for the rains to subside the shoot gets delayed, cutting into the production budget — and then the crew members go missing, one by one.

3. The boys attend a rager at Chris Brown ‘s house.

There’s cocaine, alcohol, and strippers everywhere. One of the boys ends up in bed with a groupie, and makes the mistake of falling asleep. Naturally, she takes incriminating pictures, threatening to ruin their squeaky clean image. They have to stop this from hitting TMZ at all costs.

4. Oh no! Their sophomore album leaked online, and it’s being trashed by fans and critics.

The sophomore slump is real, but can they record a whole new album in secret by the deadline the label has set? And what if the leak was… internal?

5. One of the boys is caught on Snapchat at a gay club in WeHo, having the time of his life.

He’s known as the womanizer of the group, and now the world is about to see it was all a lie. They need a “fixer” to spin this, and fast!

6. The boys’ manager wants to take the group in a new, more risque direction that they are uncomfortable with.

What does he do? He finds a new group of guys willing to do all the things the boys won’t. The rivals are gaining traction fast, and if they book the Rockefeller Christmas Tree Lighting Special first, then it’s all downhill for our boys.

7. The Boys have become the biggest act in music — even bigger than Taylor Swift and Adele.

But they’re tired from nonstop touring, and being together all the time has them irritable and ready to fight each other. The boys tell the label to cancel their worldwide tour so they can take a break. “Over my dead body,” says label president Don Combs.
