Beyoncé redefines 'I Slay' with showstopping 'Lemonade' performance

The line goes “Ashes to ashes, dust to side chicks,” but at the VMAs tonight (August 28), Beyoncé left no survivors. She came, she saw, she slay‘d and now, we’re all dead.

In celebrating the ongoing Year of Lemonade, a headline that should sit well within the Year-End Reviews later this year, Queen Bey redefined the phrase “I slay” with an epic, breathtaking and powerful performance of highlights from her landmark release. After an introduction from the one and only Serena Williams, Beyoncé descended onto the stage of Madison Square Garden and launched into a showstopping medley that kicked off with the Lemonade opener, “Pray You Catch Me.” Then she followed up with “Hold Up” and once again redefined “I slay” by wielding a bat and knocking down a camera. If that didn’t scream “slay” enough, then it was when she closed out the emotive set while surrounded by flames to songs like “Sorry,” “Don’t Hurt Yourself” and “Formation.” In the end, the VMAs, Madison Square Garden, and all of our television screens were left in the dust. There can only be one.

By the end of the night, Beyoncé exited the VMAs with seven awards. She took home the top prize of the night, winning Video of the Year for “Formation.” In addition, “Formation” also won Best Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and Best Choreography. Meanwhile, the vid for “Hold Up” also won Best Female Video, while Lemonade won Breakthrough Long Form Video.
