Velous, “Flipmode”
The only Flipmode I’ve ever known is the Busta Rhymes-led Squad, but Velous is about teach us all differently. The dude who’s earned production credits on Kanye West’s “All Day” (which garnered him two Grammy nominations) and on Drake’s “Right Hand” is, much like Drizzy, doing double-duty on his new track. Over synths and a squealing whistle beat, Velous both raps the lyrics on the verses (repetitive but rapidly) and sings the melodies on the chorus for contrast.—Danielle Cheesman
Duckwrth, “Rare Panther + Beach House”
Duckwrth is one of a few artists who consistently has me on my toes whenever he releases a new single. I never know what to expect, and on “Rare Panther + Beach House” (from his upcoming I’m Uugly EP) his musical imagination and artistic expression is very distinct and breaks the norm. Even with his music videos, the creative approach goes beyond aesthetic expectations.—Erin Ashley Simon
BoobMile$, “Just Might” feat. Scottie Kash
My initial thought for Boob Mile$’s “Just Might” was that its intro had a similar sound to Rae Sremmurd’s “Look Alive.” There were some familiar note progressions and all three are riding the same wave, but this track has its own specific element that makes it noteworthy and reminds us Boob Mile$ is in his own lane.—E.A.S.
