You like Snapchat because the videos disappear after 24 hours? Now Instagram can do that, too. As the social platforms keep nipping at each other’s heels, Instagram announced several new features in a bid to be more competitive and, ultimately, safe.

In a post on its own blog, Instagram explained that the Stories feature will let users share multiple photos and videos in a slideshow format. The content will disappear in 24 hours and won’t appear on your profile grid or in the feed. There won’t be any public likes or comments, but if you like someone else’s story, you will be able to slide in their DMs to chat. And in safety measures, if your account is private, only your followers will be able to see your story. In addition, you will have the ability to hide your entire story from anyone you don’t want to see it, even if they follow you.

“With Instagram Stories, you don’t have to worry about overposting. Instead, you can share as much as you want throughout the day — with as much creativity as you want,” according to Instagram’s post. “You can bring your story to life in new ways with text and drawing tools.” Sounds pretty familiar, huh?

In a separate feature, Instagram is trying to combat harassment by allowing users to filter their comments based on offensive terms, or to turn off comments altogether on a post-by-post basis. However, for now, the feature is just for “high volume” accounts.

Plies is to Instagram what DJ Khaled is to Snapchat, bih

“We have slowly begun to offer accounts with high volume comment threads the option to moderate their comment experience,” said Nicky Jackson Colaco, Instagram’s head of public policy. “As we learn, we look forward to improving the comment experience for our broader community.”

So, if it works for Taylor Swift and Kim Kardashian, maybe IG will roll it out to the rest of us.
