Last month, when Star Swain was on vacation in Washington, D.C., her friends and family pushed her to belt out the National Anthem at the Lincoln Memorial. She couldn’t believe it when the video of her singing got millions of views, and now her stage is even bigger: On Thursday (July 28) she sang at the Democratic National Convention, the same day Hillary Clinton accepted the party’s nomination for president of the United States.

Swain, an assistant principal in Florida, is currently pursuing a doctoral degree in education policy and evaluation from Florida State University, but being a viral sensation is taking her in unexpected directions. After her DNC appearance, Swain will perform on BET’s Joyful Noise, a new Sunday morning gospel show hosted by Tye Tribbett.
