Gucci Mane is home and Atlanta embraced him with open arms

Guwop is home and everybody was invited to his homecoming celebration.

Gucci Mane held court on Friday night (June 22) at Atlanta’s Fox Theatre, and the Georgia rapper wasted no time reminding fans what they were missing while he was gone. The Trap Star entered to “Classical” and while he meandered about, a pianist strummed the keys to an ornate white piano and launched Gucci into a boisterous two-hour set.

Gucci Mane’s ‘Everybody Looking’: First Thoughts

“First Day Out” followed and felt purposeful. Sporting a Liberace-like black and gold jacket with matching sneakers and no T-shirt to show off his new, trim physique, Gucci rapped with conviction. Baking soda, pot, and a silver spork/ You already know it’s time to go to work,” he spit. “I’m back off in the kitchen working with a chicken.”

“Photoshoot,” “Lemonade,” and “I Think I Love Her” rang out in succession. And although on this night, Gucci shared the stage with plenty of stars, he spent the major of time with Keyshia Dior by his side. Gucci’s lady lover changed outfits as many times as her man, but her first ensemble was the most eye popping: thigh-high black boots and an extra set of skin in the pink two-piece bodysuit that read “sex” in electric yellow.

The crowd perked up with favorite “Wasted,” and despite Plies’ absence the rotating guest appearances picked up and never leveled off. OJ The Juice Man (“Half a Brick), Peewee Longway, Young Dolph and Fetty Wap all arrived with excitement; the latter three helmed their own mini sets and served as a showcase for Gucci’s influence.

Still, it was Future’s appearance that was most affirming. Standing side by side, Future and Gucci Mane represented the two recent reigning kings of Atlanta, their warbly rhymes, decadent imagery, and ear for beats a blueprint (or burrprint in Gucci’s case) for Young Thug, Lil Yathty and more developing young stars.

Certified platinum acts also drafted from Laflare’s output, including Drake, who joined Future for “Jumpman” before segueing into “Energy” and a pair of duets with Gucci, “Back on Road” and “Believe It or Not.”

Having been out of the spotlight in physical form (his output never wavered), Gucci Mane closed the evening with “1st Day Out Tha Feds,” a missive to reclaim what the embattled rappers (feuds, in and of of jail, lots of music) perhaps never lost.

“Main focus every day is make it out here alive/ Take a shower in my boots and go to sleep in my shoes/ Last night I had a dream some killers ran in my room/ Trying to be patient but nigga I can’t wait/ On the chase to kill my enemies and beat my case/ So when they ask me how I feel about ’em I can’t say/ You either with me, or against me, or you in my way.”

Welcome home.
