New Music Roundup: Kehlani, Netsky & Lucas Nord
’90s-era R&B and body-moving remixes.
Funnily enough, the first three seconds of this song reminded me so much of the intro to K-Ci and JoJo’s “All My Life”—Kehlani rapidly and repeatedly rolls “Do ya, do ya, do ya…” the same way they did “Baby, baby, baby…”—so it should have come as no surprise to me that the song, “Distraction,” would recall the sounds of the ’90s R&B. The beat slinks with warm wailing synths and finger snaps, but it’s on the chorus that today’s trap drums make a cameo. All this so Kehlani can basically ask nicely and melodically for a f—k buddy: “I need you to give me your time/ I need you to not wanna be mine/ Are you down to be a distraction, baby?/ But don’t distract me…” Ha! Jokes aside; this, coupled wit “Crzy,” are making for some strong debut album teasers.—Danielle Cheesman
Netsky, “Rio Remix” feat. Macklemore
Is it hip-hop? Is it dance? Is it samba? The remix to Netsky’s “Rio” gets an assist from Macklemore, seamlessly becoming all three. The Belgian producer released the original track over a year ago, but gave it a facelift ahead of the Olympic Games starting next month in—you guessed it—Rio. Punctuated horns over a driving bassline make you think of sunshine, sand and sipping something cool on a beach.—Driadonna Roland
Phoebe Ryan, “Dollar Bill (Lucas Nord Remix)” Feat. Kid Ink
Mixing pop artists with electronic music can be a hit or miss…unless you are Justin Bieber who’s consistently teamed up with the right people. However, indie-pop artist Phoebe Ryan has received an exceptional boost for her single “Dollar Bill” thanks to Swedish producer/DJ Lucas Nord. The remix elevated her song from Carly Rae Jepsen-esque to a party playlist-worthy track. So, although the original track received over 1 million Spotify streams, this remix felt better suited for her energetic vocals and Kid Ink‘s upbeat flow. Am I right?—Erin Ashley Simon
