New Music Roundup: Gucci Mane, Tank & Elujay
Songs for narcissists and neo-soul lovers.
Gucci Mane, “Pu—y Print” Feat. Kanye West
The only reason Gucci Mane grabbed Kanye West for his latest Everybody Looking single, titled “Pu—y Print,” is…”because we both some f—king narcissists.” Now that that’s out the way, we can get into the three-and-a-half minutes of braggadocio-volleying between the two ‘narcissists.’ Guwop cruises over Mike WiLL Made-It’s trembling production like a madman behind the wheel of a monster truck, while Yeezy rhymes “sauna” with “in the bathroom at your mama’s.” It’s a random batch of boasts, but altogether these two present a G.O.O.D. bid for a ‘Ye & Guwop collab project. Just saying. Hear it here.—Ralph Bristout
Tank, “No Drugs”
Are you one of the crazy people running around saying R&B is dead? You must still be overlooking Tank, then. The singer-songwriter’s new record, “No Drugs,” is a cheeky nod to our current drug culture. Unlike other men, Tank does not need, um, performance-enhancers for the work he puts in, but his lover will be hooked once he’s done with her. Produced by Brandon “B.A.M.” Hodge, the sparse and breathy melody serves as a pedestal to prop up Tank’s sexy lyrics.—Driadonna Roland
Elujay, “We Don’t Mind” Feat. Samaria & Caleborate
2015 was the year of the Bay Area. Kehlani, G-Eazy, Iamsu!…and the list goes on. However, 2016 is the evolution year. The focus is more so on the up-and-comers than the established ones. One of the highlights is Elujay. In his latest single “We Don’t Mind,” he layers boom-bap styled drums with neo-soul piano chords to create a summertime vibe. If it it was just Elujay vibing with the instrumentals it would still be a standout song—literally, considering this jazzy feel isn’t common amongst the Bay Area artists—but the final touches are the addition of Oakland songstress Samaria and Berkeley’s Caleborate. Trifecta!—Erin Ashley Simon
