Grace Jones will replace M.I.A. as Afropunk London's headliner
After weeks of controversy, a confirmation.
Afropunk London is just trying to launch its inaugural festival, but the event has already been met with several challenges.
First, fans threatened to boycott the show after headliner M.I.A. was announced, citing her anti-“Black Lives Matter” comments as the reason for their opposition.
But the organization stood by their decision then, saying, “we would never elevate an artist or performer who we considered at odds with our ethos.”
However, a few weeks later, Afropunk backtracked, saying that after “discussing the situation with the artist and the community,” they’d removed M.I.A. from not just the line-up’s top spot, but from the festival altogether.
Finally today (July 19), Afropunk London announced it’s new headliner and it’s none other than the legendary Grace Jones (who also appeared at last year’s New York installment).
This year, Jones joins SZA, MNEK, Goldlink, Kwabs, Jorja Smith, Laura Mvula and others.
