Rewind That: How a Faith Evans remix became The Lox & Biggie's "You'll See"

“L to the O, X amount of flow…”

Prior to their grand entrance into the Bad Boy platinum penthouse, the trio of Jadakiss, Styles P and Sheek Louch had to show and prove. Mixtape cuts for DJ Clue?, DJ S&S (now spelled SNS), and Funkmaster Flex provided proper warm up. So in early 1996, when it came time to make their official debut to the world as Bad Boy artists, the Yonkers cadre of lethal emcees were dealt with not only hopping on the remix to Faith Evans’ sultry hit “You Used to Love Me,” but also doing so alongside her hubby at the time and Bad Boy’s flagship star The Notorious B.I.G.

“Our first time with Puff was a feature with B.I.G., how ill is that?,” Jadakiss told REVOLT. So in lifting a sample of EPMD’s “Only A Customer,” Puff didn’t just orchestrate an update to Faith Evans Soon As I Get Home smash, but also the world’s first collaboration between the Lox and Biggie. While Puff Daddy would go on to appear on the intended remix, the rap posse cut quickly became it’s own song, titled “You’ll See,” tucked onto Side A of 1996’s Bad Boy Mixtape Vol. 3.

“You had three emcees that were so lyrically superior and also had so much melody, rhythm and swag,” said Puff Daddy about his early work with the group. “It was what it was: working with the three greatest emcees of all-time.” With words like that, not to mention having Biggie on their first song, the title “You’ll See” couldn’t have been a better forewarning to the rap game.
