Police were directed to Alton Sterling on Tuesday (July 5) when a homeless man called 911 on the Baton Rouge resident. According to CNN, a police official confirmed the call and reported the homeless man was badgering Sterling for money when Sterling showed his firearm to distance himself from the man. “I told you to leave me alone,” he reportedly instructed the homeless person.

Police then arrived to the Triple S Food Mart parking lot, where Sterling sold CDs. The owner of the market said he knew Sterling for six years, and he was joking with Sterling moments before his death. Abdullah Muflahi said there was no altercation between Sterling and officers Blane Salamoni and Howie Lake before six shots were fired, leaving Sterling dead.
