The 15 Funniest Reactions To Justin Timberlake's "We're The Same" Tweet
Singer’s BET Awards tweet was not well-received.
Oh, Justin, Justin, Justin. If anyone’s going to be crying a river anytime soon, it’s you.
Like many of us, Justin Timberlake spent his Sunday night watching the 2016 BET Awards, getting his wig snatched by Beyoncé and Kendrick Lamar’s “Freedom” opener, ranking the tributes to the late, great Prince and, well, according to his very own tweets, getting “inspired” by Jesse Williams’ moving acceptance speech for the Humanitarian Award.
But he probably should have kept his thoughts to himself, because nothing gets past Twitter.
When the singer posted a simple tweet praising the actor—”@iJesseWilliams tho…#Inspired #BET2016″—a Twitter user took the opportunity to call out what he perceived as Timberlake’s hypocrisy: “So does this mean you’re going to stop appropriating our music and culture? And apologize to Janet too.” And instead of ignoring the “trolling” as most celebs do, Timberlake took the bait and tried to shut the man down in the process: “Oh, you sweet soul. The more you realize that we are the same, the more we can have a conversation. Bye.”
And that’s where things went left. Here are the 15 best Twitter reactions to Timberlake trying to relate and failing miserably.
When they grabbed the popcorn
With extra butter
When they let him know that he let us down
When a simple eye-roll was all the energy they had left
When they threw salt in his wound
And then mocked him for being unable to do the one thing he probably wants to
When they ironically used his own inspiration against him
When they reminded him of what they meant by “appropriation”
And suggested it be safest if he just go back to his own roots
When they began the break-up process
When they pointed out his privilege
When they turned that “never forget” on him
When they simply had to call it like they saw it
When they took joy in his pain
When they tried to remind everyone of the bigger, more important picture
However, once he climbed down from his high horse and/or his PR team talked some sense into him, Timberlake apologized, saying: “I feel misunderstood. I responded to a specific tweet that wasn’t meant to be a general response. I shouldn’t have responded anyway…I forget this forum sometimes… I was truly inspired by @iJesseWilliams speech because I really do feel that we are all one… A human race. I apologize to anyone that felt I was out of turn. I have nothing but LOVE FOR YOU AND ALL OF US. –JT”
Too bad the “human race” bit upset people all over again, so rinse, repeat, and re-read these reactions again.
