Ladies first. VH1’s “Hip Hop Honors” is returning after a six-year hiatus to pay tribute to the top female MCs in the game, and the names of its honorees are beginning to roll out.
With the ceremony aiming to applaud femme trendsetters, game changers and pioneers in hip-hop, it’s already got four great picks: Missy Elliott, Queen Latifah, Salt-N-Pepa, and Lil Kim.
Missy’s acclaimed career has garnered her five Grammy Awards and more than 30 million albums sold worldwide. Latifah, who will serve as executive producer of the show through her entertainment company Flavor Unit, was the first female lyricist to ever go gold, with her third album, Black Reign, and earned a Grammy Award for Best Solo Rap Performance in 1994. Salt-N-Pepa was the first female rap group to achieve platinum status and have gone on to sell over 12 million albums. And Lil Kim is one of the female rappers to have three consecutive platinum albums with Hard Core, Notorious K.I.M. and La Bella Mafia.
VH1 Hip Hop Honors: All Hail The Queens, airs July 11 at 9 p.m. ET.
