'Streets Of Compton' Docuseries Set To Premiere, Featuring The Game, More

An accompanying soundtrack arrives later this month.

It seems like Compton is on the come up these days. After a recent string of successful album releases and a mega-hit movie, tonight (June 9) A&E Network is now premiering a two-night, three-hour documentary miniseries, Streets of Compton. The premiere screening was held earlier this week at West Hollywood’s The Harmony Gold with a slew of hip-hop titans and heavyweights, including The Game, Scott Storch, Hona Costello and more.

The series follows the rise of Compton’s gang infestation and tumultuous culture starting all the way back in the 1950s to today. The film features interviews with some of Compton’s most noted stars such as The Game; Paul Rodriguez; the Williams’ father, Richard Williams and Eazy-E’s son, Eric Wright Jr. The story is told from ex-gang members as well so you’re getting the real story front and center. Where “Straight Outta Compton” centered on N.W.A.’s rise to fame, this project focuses more on the city and its historical background—so be ready for a history lesson. The series is at times hard to swallow, dealing with the harsh reality of gangs. The Game shared a very sad story about his father and sister at the end of the first half, which stuck with me on the drive home after the screening.

The TV series also has an accompanying soundtrack, Streets of Compton, that will be released later this month, June 17, in conjunction with the series featuring some of Compton’s most noted hip-hop artists.

Streets of Compton premieres Thursday June 9 at 9:00 p.m. ET on A&E.
