A$AP Ferg On Making ‘A.S.A.P.’ The Soundtrack For 'Real Life’

  /  04.29.2016

A$AP Ferg reveals more about himself than he’s ever had before on Always Strive And Prosper, his second studio album.

Released last week, Ferg’s latest LP is more of a biography on wax than it is a musical project — so much so that it almost warrants an ‘As Told By Darold Ferguson Jr.’ subtitle.

“I like when A$AP [Mob] came out fans didn’t get to see our growth or know our story because they seen us shining off rip… we looked like we were on already” he tells REVOLT. “So I just had to take a few steps back to school everybody on the history and lineage of where I came from.”

This more earnest, reflective approach is an evolution from the freewheeling, misty-eyed, dark lord essence from Ferg’s previous statement Trap Lord. He appears much more focused on the second chapter, equipped with a vision, newfound focus, and agenda. Evolving from lord of the trap, Ferg is man of the people on the follow-up. Much of this new guiding light is flashed on empowering A.S.A.P records like “Strive,” as well as soulful sweeps “Beautiful People” and “Grandma.” Each song tells a story.

According to Ferg, much of that is credited to records like Marvin Gaye’s What’s Going On , which served as inspiration. “What he was talking about is the same thing that’s happening now, so when I went to the studio that was my inspiration.” In addition to speaking with a purpose, Ferg says his approach with this album was become a new voice for this generation. “I need to be the new voice for what’s happening,” he mentions. “You have Kendrick [Lamar] and you have J. Cole, but [fans] haven’t heard it from me yet.”

“If you’re going through a situation and you hear “Strive” and it helps you through that situation, that’s the self promotion right there,” he confidently adds. “For life.”

A$AP Ferg’s Always Strive And Prosper is available now.
