Nas To Play 'Huge Creative Force' In New Netflix Drama, "The Get Down"

Baz Luhrmann, the mastermind for 2013’s “The Great Gatsby,” has a new series in development for Netflix that will feature Nas playing “a huge creative force.”

During a panel at the 2016 Tribeca Film Festival in New York City, Luhrmann spoke on his upcoming music-centric drama, titled ”The Get Down.” Tracing the birth of hip-hop during the ’70s in NYC, the series is expected include significant input from Nas, who will be narrating through rhyme.

“One of the things which I don’t think anyone knows, because it’s not in the trailers — and we’ve been doing this for about a year now — is that one of the characters goes on and we discover that he’s actually a successful rap star in the 90s, and he narrates it through rhyme, through rap,” said Luhrmann.

And it’s through this input that Luhrmann describes Nas’ role as “this huge creative force” in the show’s production. “It’s been playing really, really successfully.”

Can this new role spark inspiration for Nas on his next album?

In addition to Esco, Grandmaster Flash, who is portrayed by Mamoudou Athie in the series, is also serving as an adviser and associate producer on the “The Get Down.”

The new show debuts on Netflix August 12.
