The 25th MTV Movie Awards tried hard to be one for the books but instead landed somewhere between memorable and meh.
Hight points included Will Smith being honored with the Generation Award, which featured introductions by Kevin Hart, Queen Latifah, Halle Berry and a tribute performance by Lonely Island.
Beyond that, the real action happened between Marvel and DC. The comic giants had a large presence all night, with Ryan Reynolds scoring a win for Best Comedic Performance and Best Fight for his role as Marvil b-lister turned superstar, Deadpool. Reynolds’ comedic win was punctuated by a performance from Salt-N-Pepa, a nod to the film and the character’s favorite tune, “Shoop.” Meanwhile, DC premiered new footage from their expected summer blockbuster, “Suicide Quad.” Smith and his co-stars introduced the clip, which caused a buzz with a sneak-peak at The Batman’s Batmobile.
The rest of the show aimed for edge-y, but fell flat as MTV’s off-beat hijinks are snooze-worth these days, from the Best Kiss Awards to establishment wins for Leo DiCaprio, Charlize Theron and “Jurassic World” and an too-easy, already shot at target: “The Revenant” bear.
