The Chris Gethard Show (TCGS) has come a long way from its obscure and specific comedy roots. Having spent several years on the bizarre, freeform, anything-goes platform of New York public access TV, the show was picked up by Fusion last year, with its second season debuting just over a week ago.

An Upright Citizens Brigade icon and a crucially underappreciated comedic presence, Chris Gethard is known for his raw and earnest approach in connecting with his audience and ushering in a truly sincere and ongoing interaction with the viewers (and his role as Ilana’s milquetoast boss on Broad City). Some of the more telling episodes of TCGS are titled things like “Show Us The Weirdest Thing On Your Body,” “Straight Up Phone Sex,” and “Sum Yourself Up In A Dance Move.” The show has an incredibly unique place in comedy due to Gethard’s undying effort to connect and engage with his audience at all times. However, sometimes productions go off the rails, and unforeseen forces take the reins.

Enter Puff Daddy. After an honest intro to Season 2, Episode 2, where Chris explains that expected guest comedian Pete Holmes will be unable to make the show, he begins to understandably attempt to justify why having no celebrity guest is not such an awful thing. Alas, just after the ten-minute mark, the lights dim, and out of nowhere Sean Combs enters through “The Diddy Door.” The energy in the studio skyrockets, as fans can hardly believe their eyes. What is a hip-hop mogul and cultural icon doing on some niche comedy show? (The answer, they have history.)

Watch PD arrive and save the show, see just how down to-the-wire a live production can get and admire the bond the Bad Boy and Gethard share: to make any given crowd happy.
